Episode 173: You Don’t Know This Man

This week STICK TO WRESTLING is once again joined by Thomas Bane as we present Part Two of our look at the 1992 Phil Donahue show where Vince McMahon, Bruno Sammartino, Superstar Billy Graham, Barry Orton, Dave Meltzer, John Arezzi, and Murray Hodgkin all appear.

This is from the period where the WWF’s sex and drug scandals were at their peak, and we took a look at what got the WWF to this place. There are accusations of steroid use, rampant use of recreational drugs, sexual harassment and sexual assault, and more. We take a look at everything that is being said.

Episode 169: You’re Not Gonna Turn On Me, Are You?

Popular guest Christian Boddie returns to Stick To Wrestling and we thave Part Two of our discussion about our favorite Summer in wrestling which happened thirty five years ago: 1986. Discussed on this week’s episode:

–Paul Orndorff turning on Hulk Hogan may have been obvious and an overly simplistic story, but their feud drew spectacularly.

–The AWA and World Class Championship Wrestling came into 1986 still looking and feeling like major league promotions. By the middle of this Summer they did not.

–Roddy Piper finally turns babyface and of course, is immediately in main events.

–The UWF putting on great television. The Freebirds and Eddie Gilbert’s crew are the lead heels while Hacksaw Duggan, Ted Dibiase, Steve Williams, and Terry Taylor are the top babyfaces. Bill Watts comes out of retirement and makes things even more interesting

–Championship Wrestling from Florida continues to spiral despite having the mega-talented Barry Windham and the promising Lex Luger in the promotion.

–The suspended Andre The Giant returns to the WWF…in disguise, as the Giant Machine.

–Bill Watts calling Paul Orndorff a word that one usually wouldn’t associate with Paul.

–Orndorff’s “disappearance” in 1983 after leaving Georgia not really being a disappearance.

–Orndorff hitting the big time in the WWF.

–WCW misused Paul Orndorff. What a surprise.

Plus we talk about Orndorff getting hit in the face with a bottle at the old Boston Garden, so what are you waiting for? Download and listen to this wicked good bad boy!

Episode 149: Let’s Discuss A Forty Year Old List

This week STICK TO WRESTLING is joined once again by popular guest Brad Breitzman, as we discuss a Top 50 list put out by Wrestling World in the Spring of 1981. We talk about:

–Gene Kiniski, who had been in semi-retirement for twelve years, being ranked #43.

–How do you rank a wrestler like Andre The Giant?

–They didn’t include the NWA, WWF, or AWA champions, and Nick Bockwinkel was ranked #1. Was Wrestling World tipped off that Nick was about to regain the AWA title?

–Who was egregiously missing from this top fifty?

–Why is the Pacific Northwest / Portland territory excluded?

Johnny Mac and Brad probably probably put more time discussing this list than the author did creating it, so what are you waiting for? Download and listen to this wicked good bad boy!

Episode 148: What If Bruno Had WHAT?

STICK TO WRESTLING is once again joined by popular guest John Jance, and we enter into an alternative universe. Bruno Sammartino was seriously injured in 1976, and told promoter Vince McMahon Sr that he wanted out. Bruno cut way down on his dates right after losing the WWWF title to Superstar Billy Graham and was completely out of wrestling by the end of 1981. But what if Bruno has Ricflairitis, a condition one suffers from when they can’t walk away from the business? We discuss that and the butterfly effect it would have had.

–When does Vince Jr. finally pull the title from Bruno?

–What effect would this have had on the careers of Superstar Billy Graham and Bob Backlund?

–When would Bruno finally have to retire?

–What impact would this have had on David Sammartino’s career? Would it have hurt Bruno if the fans knew he was old enough to have an adult son?

–How often did Bruno wrestle after dropping the title to Graham? The answer may surprise you.

Plus John Jance shares a story about corresponding with a young Dave Meltzer and how not everything was a secret back in the day, so what are you waiting for? Download and listen to this wicked good bad boy!
