Episode 237: Kerry’s Number One

This week STICK TO WRESTLING is joined by popular returning guest host Chris Tabar as we celebrate the Fortieth Anniversary of the 1982 WCCW Star Wars Christmas Night show at Renion Arena in Dalas, with Ric Flair defending the NWA title in a Cage Match against Kerry Von Erich in the main event. This truly was an epic and historic night of wrestling, and we review it for you!

–Buddy Roberts is “stuck at the airport in Denver” leaving The Freebirds’ Michael Hayes and Terry Gordy at a disadvantage, but David Von Erich saves the day.
–The show featured a Pole Battle Royal Match, with a surprise winner.
–The Ric Flair vs Kerry Von Erich match had the ultimate “big fight” feel, and we tell you about it.
–Michael Hayes is the special referee for this match, and he brings Terry Gordy to guard the cage door. Kerry is surrounded by allies! What could possibly go wrong?
–Bill Mercer describer Michael Hayes’ refereeing as “amatuerish”. That’s certainly one way of putting it.
–We analyze the Flair vs Kerry match itself, and it’s truly one for the ages in every respect: storytelling, action, and the reaction from the fans at the end. When all was said and done this promotion had a blindingly bright 1983 ahead of it.

Episode 96: December, 1983 (Oh, What a Night)

This week on Stick To Wrestling we take a look back at the wrestling events that were held on December 25, 1983. It’s a significant date because it’s the final night of holiday shows before the WWF expanded nationally. We touch upon:

–The decline of Georgia Championship Wrestling and the dreadful Mr. R angle.

–The AWA ran a major show on this night, and their age problems are showing as the main event is a 49 year old Nick Bockwinkel defends against a 54 year old Mad Dog Vachon.

Episode 9: Men Without Hats: McAdam, Goodwin & The Great Brian Last

John McAdam and Sean Goodwin are joined by The Great Brian Last, who is the first to sit in Stick To Wrestling’s guest chair! We discuss the year in wrestling that was 1983, the final time the territories existed peacefully- well, sort of. In hindsight there were plenty of writing on the subway wall telling us that the wrestling world would soon be radically changing and that the “War of ‘84“ was inevitable. Download, listen, and discover that it really wasn’t Vincent Kennedy McMahon who killed the territories, despite any claims to the contrary.
