Episode 232: Minimal Screwjob Talk

This week STICK TO WRESTLING is joined by Game Changing Wrestling’s Own Emil Jay as we review the 1997 Survivor Seires on it’s 25th Anniversary month.

As advertised, we don’t overdo talk of the infamous “Montreal Screwjob” but we take a deep dive into the event itself. On the discussion table:

–No matter what would happened with Bret Hart, Vince McMahon’s on-screen character was already in the middle of a heel turn.
–Mick Foley takes some incredible bumps on this show, but that’s been completely forgotten thanks to Hell in the Cell and the other thing that happened on this night.
–Shawn Michaels had some guts for brawling with Bret in the middle of a very hostile crowd.
–Ken Shamrock seems to be getting set up for a big push.
–Kane: many wrestling fans hated this gimmick.
–Some of the signs in the crowd were absolutely wild.

Episode 222: The Human Victory Cigar

This week STICK TO WRESTLING is joined by popular returning guest Alfred Sumrall and we discuss the top ten wrestlers of 1997. On the bill:

–Shawn Michaels wasn’t universally beloved, but he was entertaining outside of the ring and amazing inside of it. Was he Number one?

–Hulk Hogan also wasn’t universally beloved, but he held the WCW world title for all but two weeks of 1997. Was he Number one?

–Was Bret Hart Number One? He has has quite a case.

–By the end of the year Steve Austin was the hottest star in the wrestling business since Hulk Hogan. Was he Number one?

–The Undertaker is not likely to be ranked Number One, but he may have been the WWF’s Most Valuable Player in 1997. Where does he rank?

–As Ric Flair’s career winds down, at least theoretically, does he make the Top Ten in 1997?

Plus there’s a long extra innings post show segment where Alfred and John discuss the upcoming NFL season, so what are you waiting for? Download and listen to this wicked good podcast today!

Episode 199: The Wrestling Show, Not The Magazine

This week STICK TO WRESTLING is joined by first time guest Dr. Nicholas Coliadis as we celebrate the 25th Anniversary of ECW’s first pay-per view, Barely Legal. Let’s take a trip back to the 90’s as we discuss:

–One can’t say the letters E-C-W without there being a mention of the promotion not aging well. True as that may be, this was a really good show.

–What a crowd. Almost no women or families. Still, the audience was a positive part of the show and knew how to react to everything.

–Should a 53 year old Terry Funk have been the anchor of this promotion?

–How does the six man Michinoku Pro match hold up 25 years later?

–It’s never easy to do a double turn, but they pulled one off perfectly on this night.

–Stevie Richards, the future of ECW?

This week STICK TO WRESTLING is joined by Jake “The Valentine” Hamar! It’s Wrestlemania Month here at STW as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of Wrestlemania 13, the event that sealed Stone Cold Steve Austin ascention into superstardom. We discuss:

–Every year, there’s Match of the Year. Was Bret Hart vs Steve Austin Match of the Forever?

–Rocky sucked, but The Rock was great.

–Was The Undertaker vs Sid the worst Wrestlemania main event to date?

–The WWF could not ever turn Bret Hart heel…ever…or could they?

–Was there going to be a resurgence of the Road Warriors, or by this time were they just a 1980’s nostalgia act?

–Speaking of the 80’s, why did Bob Backlund, Rocky Johnson, Iron Sheik, and others from that era get so much camera time here?
